Solar Heat-Reduction Blinds

Big glazing looks stunning and then bakes the room behind it. Solar heat-reduction blinds use reflective screen fabrics to turn down the heat and glare from large windows, bi-fold doors and glazed extensions while keeping the daylight and much of the view.

What they are

Solar heat-reduction blinds are made-to-measure blinds cut from solar-screen or reflective fabrics engineered to block a defined proportion of the sun's heat and UV. They are the answer to the modern problem of large expanses of glass — floor-to-ceiling windows, bi-fold and sliding doors, and glazed kitchen extensions.

Unlike a heavy blackout blind, a solar screen keeps a degree of transparency: it cuts heat, glare and fading while you can still see out and daylight still reaches the room.

How the solar shading works

The fabric is woven or coated to reflect and absorb solar radiation. Its 'openness factor' sets how much you can see through it, while a reflective backing sends heat back out through the glass.

By intercepting sunlight at the window, the blind stops much of the heat before it enters — far more effective than trying to cool the room afterwards. The same fabric blocks the ultraviolet light that fades floors, furniture and artwork.

Roller and vertical formats suit big glazing best, and either can be solar-powered or electrically motorised so a whole run of doors operates as one.

Where they fit

  • Floor-to-ceiling and picture windows
  • Bi-fold and sliding patio doors
  • Glazed single-storey extensions and garden rooms
  • South- or west-facing living spaces and home offices with screen glare

Why choose them

Blocks heat at the glass

Reflecting the sun at the window stops heat before it enters — much more effective than cooling a room that is already hot.

Keeps the view

Solar-screen fabric stays partly see-through, so you cut glare and heat without shutting out the daylight or the garden.

Protects interiors

By filtering UV, the blinds slow the fading of wood floors, upholstery, artwork and worktops.

Scales to big openings

Roller and vertical formats span wide bi-folds and tall glazing, with solar or electric motors for one-touch control.

Solar Heat-Reduction Blinds — FAQs

How are these different from ordinary blinds?

The fabric is engineered specifically to reflect solar heat and UV while staying partly transparent. A standard blind either blocks the view entirely or does little to stop heat; a solar-screen fabric is designed to do both jobs at once.

Will the room go dark?

No. Solar screens keep an 'openness' that lets daylight and a softened view through. If you also want blackout — in a bedroom, say — we can pair a solar screen with a separate blackout blind.

Do they help with screen glare in a home office?

Yes. Cutting direct sun at the glass removes the harsh glare that washes out monitors and TVs, which is one of the most common reasons people fit them.
