Automated Skylight Blinds
Automated skylight blinds solve the two problems every roof window has: heat and reach. A solar-powered motor lets you shade an out-of-reach skylight at the touch of a button, with no wiring run across the roof void.
What they are
Skylights and roof windows are wonderful for light, but they sit out of reach and let in a surprising amount of heat. An automated skylight blind is a made-to-measure blind — usually blackout or light-filtering — with a solar-powered motor, so you can shade the window from the floor with a remote.
We supply blinds sized to fit VELUX, Fakro, RoofLite and other common roof windows. Each blind runs in side channels so it holds position on the slope and blocks light cleanly at the edges.
How the self-charging works
A solar panel on the blind's top bar collects daylight — exactly where a roof window gets most of it — and charges an internal battery.
That battery powers a quiet motor that runs the blind up and down its guide rails on command. Because a skylight sits in open sky view, the panel charges reliably and manual recharging is rarely needed.
Critically, there is no wiring. Cabling a motor to a roof window means opening up the reveal or the ceiling void; a solar blind avoids all of that, which is why it is the standard choice for retrofitting shade to an existing skylight.
Where they fit
- Loft conversions and vaulted bedrooms with VELUX roof windows
- Kitchen and extension roof windows that overheat in summer
- Bathrooms and en-suites needing blackout privacy overhead
- Any skylight too high to reach comfortably with a pole
Why choose them
Shade the unreachable
Operate a high roof window from the floor with a remote — no poles, no standing on furniture.
Blackout for sloped glass
Side channels block light down the edges, so a blackout skylight blind genuinely darkens the room for sleep.
Cuts overhead heat
Roof windows gain heat fast; a fitted blind reflects and blocks a large share before it reaches the room.
Retrofit without wiring
Solar power lets you add an automated blind to an existing skylight without touching the ceiling or roof void.
Automated Skylight Blinds — FAQs
Will these fit my VELUX window?
Almost certainly. VELUX and most other roof windows carry a size code on a label inside the frame. Give us that code or the pane dimensions and we supply a blind made to fit, running in side channels.
Why choose solar rather than a mains-wired motor for a skylight?
Running a cable to a roof window usually means opening up the reveal or ceiling. A solar motor needs none of that, so it is far less disruptive to retrofit — and the panel charges well because skylights face open sky.
Can I get true blackout overhead?
Yes. Choose a blackout fabric and the blind's side channels stop light leaking down the edges, which is what makes overhead blackout effective for bedrooms and nurseries.
